Applies to: Webflow websites built by Rhythm Digital
Parts of your website are built as collections rather than as individual pages. A collection is simply a list of things that share the same shape, where every item has the same set of fields filled in differently. Your team page, your projects gallery, your services, your stock listings and your blog are all usually collections.
The advantage is that you add one item once and it appears everywhere it needs to. Add a new staff member to your Team collection and they turn up on the team page, and in the little "meet the team" strip on your homepage, without you touching either.
Before you start, you'll need to be logged in. See How to get into your website to make changes.
Adding an item
- Find the relevant collection in the editing panel. It'll be named for what it holds, like Team, Projects or Services.
- Choose to add a new item.
- Fill in the fields. These were set up when your site was built, so they'll match what that collection needs, for example a name, role, photo and short bio for a team member.
- Save it.
- Publish when you're ready.
Filling in the fields properly
- Fill in everything you can. A blank field can leave a gap on the page.
- Match the pattern of what's already there. Open an existing item first and see how it's been filled in. If every current bio is two sentences, write two sentences.
- Photos matter most. Try to match the shape and style of the existing photos. Team pages in particular look odd when one person's shot is a different crop or a different background to everyone else's.
Changing an existing item
Open it, change what you need, save and publish. The change flows through to every place on the site that shows that item.
Removing an item
Most collections let you archive or delete an item. Archiving is safer, because it takes it off the site but keeps the details in case you want it back. A staff member on parental leave is a good example.
Be careful deleting anything that's been on the site a long time, especially a blog post or a project, because the page address disappears with it. If anyone has linked to it or it turns up in Google, they'll hit a dead page. Send those to us instead and we'll take it down and put a redirect in place.
What you can't do here
You can add, edit and remove items in an existing collection. Creating a whole new collection, for example starting a "Case studies" section that doesn't exist yet, needs us to build it. That's because a new collection needs its fields designed and then placed on the site properly. Email support@rhythmdigital.au and we'll scope it.
